New Zealand topographic maps for walking
Look beyond the track line. Use the terrain, access points and places along the way to plan a walk that suits you.
Start with a place
Find a track, hut or campsite by name. Its page opens the connected walking network on a LINZ topographic basemap. You can explore other tracks in the same network without starting a new search.
Choose your route
Add a start, a finish and any places you want to visit in between. Markara follows the stored track network and offers alternative paths where the network supports them. Reverse the plan to compare the climb in the other direction, or return to your starting point.
Read distance and height together
The distance belongs to your selected plan. Ascent adds up the climbing; descent adds up the downhill sections. Elevation range is the difference between the lowest and highest known points. These numbers answer different questions. Missing height data is shown explicitly, and a gap in the elevation profile stays a gap.
Find an entrance
Hut and campsite pages offer walking approaches from stored access points. Entrances labelled “inferred” were estimated from mapped infrastructure and need checking before you set out. A line on the map does not establish permission to cross private land.
Check before you go
Read the current DOC alerts and the source information for your walk. Markara is an independent planning tool. Map data and calculated distances do not confirm that a track is open or suitable for the conditions.
