Outdoor Safety Notice
Read before planning or recording an outdoor activity
Markara is an informational outdoor mapping and tracking tool. It is not an emergency service, rescue service, certified navigation system or safety-critical system.
Outdoor activities carry risk
Walking and other outdoor activities can result in serious injury or death. Conditions can change quickly, and a phone or map app may fail when you need it. Do not rely on Markara as your only source of navigation, safety information or communication.
Maps and route information may be wrong
Track lines, junctions, bridges, huts, campsites, access points, alerts, GPS positions, distance, elevation and walking-time estimates may be incomplete, inaccurate, out of date or unavailable. A suggested or automatically connected route is not proof of legal access, physical passability or safety. Offline information may be older than current conditions.
Check official information
Before setting out, check current track notices, closures, weather, access rules and conditions with DOC and other relevant land managers. The absence of an alert in Markara does not mean a route is open or safe. Follow signs, permits, landowner instructions and conservation restrictions.
Prepare independently
- Choose a route suitable for your experience, fitness and equipment.
- Tell someone your plans and expected return time.
- Check forecasts, daylight, river conditions and recent track reports.
- Carry suitable clothing, food, water, a map and independent navigation.
- Consider a personal locator beacon or other suitable emergency communication equipment.
- Keep your phone charged, but plan for battery loss, poor reception and device failure.
Account deletion and offline access
Deleting your Markara account permanently ends access to account-linked purchases, including paid offline regions, and removes account-linked plans and activity records. Do not delete your account immediately before or during an activity if you need those plans or offline maps. Maintain independent navigation. Markara does not offer a refund, credit or compensation solely because you choose to delete your account. Mandatory consumer rights and applicable app-store refund and restoration rules remain unaffected; see the Terms for the purchase conditions.
Make decisions based on conditions
Use your judgement and the conditions you observe. Turn back or change your plan if weather, terrain, river levels, track conditions, your equipment or your wellbeing make continuing unsafe. If information in Markara conflicts with signs, official advice or conditions on the ground, do not treat the app as proof that it is safe to continue.
GPS and recording
GPS positions can be delayed or inaccurate, especially near steep terrain, dense vegetation or buildings. Recording may stop because of battery loss, permissions, device settings or software failure. Check that recording is active and do not rely on a saved track as your only record of a walk.
Emergencies
Markara does not automatically detect an accident, monitor your safety, transmit an emergency alert or dispatch rescue. In New Zealand, call 111 in an emergency when you have a working connection. Use an appropriate emergency beacon or communication equipment when necessary. If Markara is offered in another country, follow that country's verified emergency guidance.
Your legal rights
This notice describes the limitations and risks of outdoor use. It does not exclude any consumer guarantee, liability, right or remedy that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited.
